Thumbnail size and file limits
Thumbnails display at 16:9. 1280 × 720 is the long-standing standard and stays under the 2 MB limit for uploads from a phone. YouTube has started accepting larger 4K thumbnails uploaded from a computer, which can look sharper on TVs.
"Blurred edges" is useful for vertical photos and screenshots: the full image stays visible, and the sides fill with a soft, blurred copy instead of black bars.
